Vegan Apple Crisp

Apples are dirt cheap at the markets right now. I picked myself up a nice bag of them last week. I've been aching to make some sort of apple pie, tart, crisp or cobbler. This was my first attempt and I've already made a mental note to add a pinch of cinnamon and perhaps some other spices next time around.

I found this recipe on foodnetwork.com and just vegan-ized it (it was pretty easy because the only non vegan ingredient was butter).
This recipe basically uses rolled oats, brown sugar, a little flour and a lot of butter
I wasn't going for healthy here at all. Sometimes desserts are just meant to be bad.

Hope everyone had a great weekend
It's almost Thanksgiving here in the U.S. and I'm starting to prepare my menu. First on my list, fresh cranberry sauce- I will not eat from a CAN hehe.

PS
Can someone tell me the difference between cobbler and crisp?

I don't know the difference between a cobbler and a crisp. Maybe cobblers have that topping stuff on top, and crisps don't? I'm not sure, but this looks great, and I'm with you on the cheap, local apples. Yum.

That looks scrumptious! We just polished off our 2 bushels of apples and all the local orchards have sold out. So I'm not sure what we're going to do because I NEED APPLES. Seriously. Every day. Cause that's what keeps the doctor away, right?

I'm not an expert on culinary terms or anything, but all the cobblers I've had have been very saucy and syrupy, whereas crisps seem to keep the fruit more intact and let it stand alone. Also, cobblers don't always have the nutty oat topping--sometimes it just seems to be like pieces of pie crust baked on top.

All that aside, your apple crisp looks great--I love seeing big chunks of fruit in my dessert, it helps me forget about the gobs of fat!

Looks so autumnally yummy

Don't quote me, but I think cobblers have a more pie-like rust over top, whereas crisps & crumbles have amore crumbly, less "formal" top.

But what's in a name? They all taste good ;)

A cobbler is a baked, deep-dish fruit dessert topped with a biscuit crust. A crisp (or crumble - same thing) has fruit on the bottom with a crumb topping that can be made of flour, nuts, breadcrumbs, etc.

My favorite book for answering these kinds of questions is the Food Lover's Companion. It's got definitions of nearly 6,000 food, drink and culinary terms. :-)

I haven't a clue what the difference between a crisp and a cobler is, but I'm looking forward to finding out!

I can't wait to see your cranberry sauce. I love the home-made stuff.
