Quinoa

I tried QUINOA for the first time last night and I have to say- it was good! (well better than good) As I ate I thought "this tastes like grain caviar". Looks like I'll be eating it again for sure

I didn't really use a recipe. I looked around at what I had and made it work. What I ended up eating was-
Quinoa with sauteed leeks, black beans and fresh pearl tomatoes.
YUM YUM YUM : )

What I love most about quinoa is that I can just throw it into my rice cooker and then when it's done mix it with all my other ingredients. Quick and simple.

For dessert I melted some semi sweet chocolate and dipped strawberries into it. However, I forgot to grease the plate or put down some plastic wrap so the dessert stuck to the plate- OPPS. It tasted devine though . Okay, I need to admit I added a SECRET ingredient to the chocolate to make it have a little something extra. (I don't know if anyone else would use it but it turned out great hehe: )) Not sure if Im going to announce the ingredient just yet though.

Overall it was a great meal!

Time to enjoy my LAZY Sunday

You're killing me with the suspense of the secret ingredient! I made dipped fruits (including strawberries) last night again.

Yummmmm chocolate and strawberries. Now the quinoa, that's another story. I just can't get a taste for this grain, we've tried it a couple of times, different dishes, tasted flat and we didn't like the texture. Maybe cooking in a rice cooker added the right amount of moisture???
Thanks for stopping by Veggies. The Mitz says, Paws Up to you too. BFN, G

Hi Teddy, thanks or coming by my blog the other day. I tried Quinoa for the first time a couple of months ago too. My friends made a great recipe with it, it was SOOOO Good, you might like it if you like carrots.
Add 2 tbs chopped shallots to two tbs melted butter.
Cook 1 minute.
Add 1/2 cup carrots peeled and chopped.
Cook 1 minute.
Add 2/3 cup vegetable broth
Bring to boil. Reduce to simmer. Cook 15 minutes.
Process mixture in food processor until smooth.
Return to clean pan.
Add 1 cup stock
Heat to boil
Add 2/3 cup quinoa
reduce heat. Simmer until quinoa is tender
Add 1/4 tsp cumin.
BTW, my brother and family used to live in Costa Mesa/Santa Ana area, so jealous of your weather!

OOOOH, a secret ingredient. Go Teddy! The strawbs look superb! Do you ever get to Whole Foods? How about Wild Oats? They're both on the outrageously expensive side but always have such gorgeous looking fruit and veggies.

I'm not huge on quinoa either. The taste isn't my fave but I am getting more used to it lately!

Is the secret ingredient soymilk...agave nectar...acai? Haha, I'll check back later!

Glad to hear you like the quinoa. Now you have to try Dreena's (VLV) Quinoa Spring Salad.

So the secret ingredient was coconut milk. It added a little creamy-ness and gave the chocolate a tiny hint of coconut. : )

Give it a try, tell me what you think!

Oh and i'd definately try making the quinoa in the rice maker. I loved the texture. like little grainy caviar

Thanks for the recipe caroline! : ) I'll give it a shot

Kleo- believe it or not there aren't any whole foods near where I live :(
but there is a growers direct farmers market and a TJ's and a Mothers Market (I think they're only in OC). The combo of those, I get everything I need

Coconut milk! I love the smell of that... I'll bet it gives the chocolate extra delish flavour...

Mothers Market... is that like Bristol Farms? (We don't have BF down here but I know of 'em up in L.A.)

I depend on Trader Joe's!

Great idea to use the coconut milk! I don't think I would have thought to do that. I love chocolate covered strawberries.
