Rambutan Results

A week ago I posted about my Freeze Dried Rambutan from Trader Joe's. I've finally gotten around to a taste test.

They look interesting at least

The results are disappointing to say the least. Trader Joe's, I'm sorry but Freeze Dried Rambutan are a BAD idea.
They are nothing like the actual fruit. They lack flavor and the wonderful texture of the original fruit (which I expected but in a MUCH worse way). I'm trying to figure out what I'll do with the rest of the bag. Maybe I'll find a creative way to dress them up and make them decent. Until that idea comes to me, they'll be sitting in my pantry.

I had seen your original post and ALMOST bought these today at TJ. I was so glad I didn't when I got home and read your update.

BTW, TJ has a satisfaction guarantee. You can just take them back and tell them you did not like them and they will give you your money back.

I'm with that last commenteer - they really are great! I've never tried the actual fruit, so - for me it's just the freeze dried stuff - and mmm, mmmm, mmmm.

I just tried some of these. Having never tried the actual fruit, I don't know what I'm missing, but I thought the freeze dried version was... interesting. The package described it as a complex flavor, and they were right. It's a little sweet, a little sour, and a little... bacon? Good to try, but I probably don't need to buy a second bag. Sorry it didn't work out for you.

I grew up in the far east and have had the original fruit many times. I was surprised to see the freeze dried version at Tjs and bought them to try it out! I agree that they don't taste like the original fruit but having that expectation is a little pointless... these are freeze dried!!! ...hello!
I loved the taste of them though. Sweet and sour like I remember and crunchy to boot. Delish! I'd get them again for sure!
