Avocado Facts

I decided to go with something that i was having wiht my dinner tonight- I LOVE living in CA. : )

Facts from: CA Avocados
  • Avocados are a fruit, not a vegetable!
Many countries eat them with/as desert

  • Brazilians add avocados to ice cream
  • Filipinos puree avocados with sugar and milk for a dessert drink.
  • Latin Americans wrap avocados up and give them as wedding gifts
  • San Diego County is the Avocado Capital of the U.S., producing 60% of all the avocados grown in California. ( Used to live there!)
AND
  • California produces about 90% of the nation's avocado crop.
Avocados are a good source of Vitamin C, E, Iron, Potassium and Manganese.

Recipe for Avocado Shake (modified for vegans)

1/2 an Avocado
1 1/2 cups almond or soy milk
1/2 cup ice
3 table spoons of sugar (i'm thinking of trying some maple syrup instead and perhaps a little cinnamon and nutmeg)
Combine and BLEND till smooth

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tonight's dinner is a Veggie burger w/ pickles, mustard, tomatoes and AVOCADO.
and
sweet potato fries
and
half an avocado with salt and pepper : )
(posting pics tomorrow!!)

I haven't had a chance to eat my peaches yet.. but Richard is moving in tomorrow so I might make us a nice desert with them or breakfast...

Talk with you all tomorrow!

Teddy : )

Teddy, great info, as always!!

I think i may be the only veg*n who doesn't have the taste buds to appreciate the avocado. Every time I tell someone I don't particularly care for this fruit (yes, Teddy, thank you as always for the insight and info about the food you write about!) they will almost always say, incredulously, "WHAT!? You're a vegetarian and YOU DON'T LIKE AVOCADOS?"

I know i'm in the minority... maybe someday soon i'll give the green guys another try...

Yes, Filipinos (which I am) make avocado shakes, which some people here think is weird! It's even a popular ice cream flavor.

This shake looks fantastic, I am ready to try one right now LOL!!! I absolutely love avocados. I remember seeing them growing in CA and how beautiful they looked on the trees. You are lucky to have them so nice and fresh where you live. I am beginning to see CA avocados showing up in the stores here again, for a long time only the ones from Mexico were available. Thanks for stopping by Veggies too....

Hi everyone.

Thanks for stopping by
Kleo- I'll have to agree with everyone on this one. You live in one of the avocado capitals of the world and you don't like avocados?! hehe Actaully I know quite a few people who don't like them. : )

Kai- One of my good friends is Brazilian and likes to make avocado shakes. At first it was a little weird, but I'm warming up to the idea.

G- Avocado season is starting to come upon us! Get ready to start seeing them more and more. and thanks to you too for stopping by : )

I looooooove avocados! I’ve got three in my fridge getting a bit too soft right now so I think it’s time to make some guac! I went to the avo fest in Carpentaria, CA last October and had some avo ice cream, not bad! One of my Filipino co-workers was telling me about that sweet milky avo concoction the other day, sounds interesting.
